In honor of the birthday and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the MLK Celebration Committee is pleased to announce the 8th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest. 

Winning essays may be published on the MLK Committee website and recognized as part of the 2021 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Event in January. Top three winners in each category will receive cash prizes: 1st place $250, 2nd place $150, and 3rd place $100. 

The 2021 MLK Essay Contest Theme: Congressman John Lewis was an African American politician and civil rights leader who fought to end legalized racial segregation in the United States. Like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., John Lewis preached “get in good trouble, necessary trouble” with an emphasis on non-violence. Congressman Lewis encouraged peaceful protests to achieve goals such as guaranteeing the right to vote for all Americans. 

Congressman Lewis encouraged others to stand up for justice.  With COVID-19 health guidelines in mind, describe an injustice that you see in today’s society and what you can do to address the issue and advancement of John Lewis’ call to action. Essays must not exceed 300 words.  The submission deadline is Monday, December 21, 2020. 

The essay contest is open to all middle and high school students throughout Sacramento, Yolo, Placer, El Dorado, and Sutter Counties.  Winners will be chosen from each category.
